AUSTIN (KXAN) — TxTag customers, beware: the Texas Department of Transportation said fraudulent texts are targeting system users.

There have been numerous reports from TxTag customers receiving text messages that allege the customer has a balance due or past due, TxDOT officials said in a release Wednesday. State agency leaders added the texting phishing efforts have been detected since April but "appear to have increased recently."

TxDOT said that TxTag does communicate with customers via emails, texts or phone calls but added TxTag doesn't text customers about final payment reminders or past due balances. All verified TxTag texts are sent from the number 22498, officials said, adding text and email communications are only shared when a customer has opted in to receive them.

Those receiving questionable texts, emails or messages are asked to not click on or open any links attached. Instead, customers are encouraged to connect with TxTag's customer service team online or over the phone by calling 1-888-468-9824.

Customers can also file a claim with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center online.
