Man charged with tech support scam in Mechanicville
MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Brooklyn man was arrested in Mechanicville in connection to a scam investigation, according to police. MD Mizanur Rahman, 31, is facing numerous charges.
Rahman is accused of running an online tech support scam with a partner in an attempt to defraud an elderly couple in Mechanicville out of thousands of dollars. He reportedly traveled from New York City to Mechanicville to finalize the scheme by demanding cash payments from the couple.
The victims reported the situation to Mechanicville Police, who were able to intercept Rahman and take him into custody on South Second Avenue on Tuesday. He now faces the following charges:
- Third-degree grand larceny
- Third-degree attempted grand larceny
- First-degree scheme to defraud
- First-degree attempted scheme to defraud
"This case is a reminder of the importance of vigilance against scams that target vulnerable members of our community," said Mechanicville Chief of Police William Rabbitt. "We urge residents to be cautious when receiving unsolicited communications, especially those requesting money or personal information."
