Harry Kane confesses that his path to the Tottenham first-team was far from straight-forward, with the club almost releasing him not long after he joined.
Harry Kane had a tough start to his career
Most people know about the fact that Kane was released from Arsenal’s academy at the age of just nine before signing for Tottenham as a schoolboy a couple of years later.
However, even at Spurs, the path to the top was not without its challenges, with the centre-forward not considered one of the best in his age group, with the likes of Tom Carroll, Steven Caulker and Andros Townsend seen by many as more promising prospects.
Kane also struggled to make an impact in his loan spells at the EFL, which raised serious doubts about his ability to shine at the Premier League level.
Spurs almost let Harry Kane go
The striker has now confessed that Tottenham almost decided to let him go soon after he signed for the academy, explaining that he was driven by a desire to prove people wrong from an early age.
When asked about people doubting him, the striker told The Independent: “Probably throughout my whole career, really. Starting from when I was eight years old being released from Arsenal. That might have built a bit of desire to prove them wrong when I was that age.
“And even when I first came to Spurs … I was close to being released. I was never the guy that everyone thought was going to go on and do what I’ve done. I think that desire to improve, just step by step in my career.
“I went on loan, had a couple of good loans, a couple of not so good but still had to fight for my place, fight for the opportunity to show that I could play at the level I wanted to, in the Premier League at that time and England.
“Throughout my career, there have always been people who doubted me.”

Perhaps it is the mental strength and resilience that Kane developed as a result of his early setbacks that have helped him overcome the hurdles placed before him in his professional career and get to the level that he has as a player.
