Postecoglou faces key Kulusevski decision ahead of North London Derby – Alasdair Gold

Fotball.London’s Alasdair Gold feels that Ange Postecoglou will have to make some big decisions ahead of the North London Derby, including his midfield combination and Dejan Kulusevski’s position.

Postecoglou will hope to have both Dominic Solanke and Micky van de Ven back available for the big clash on Sunday after the former missed the last two games with an ankle injury and the latter was sidelined for the trip to St James’ Park.

Although it is still extremely early days in the campaign, the game on Sunday already feels like a season-defining one, with Tottenham needing a result after picking up just one point from their two away trips so far.

Gold has now explained in his column that one of the big decisions that face Postecoglou is regarding the combination of the midfield, with the Tottenham head coach having to decide between Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma (if he is injury-free) and Pape Sarr.

He suggests that the Australian might also throw a curve ball by picking one of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray into the starting eleven.

Where should Kulusevski play against Arsenal?

However, the journalist points out that perhaps the hardest decision facing the 59-year-old is regarding whether to play Kulusevski through the middle.

Gold writes in his column: “He (Postecoglou) used Kulusevski in the midfield trio on the right with Maddison and Bissouma against Everton and it worked perfectly. The Spurs boss switched to it again in the second half at Newcastle and it made an impact again.

“The conundrum now for Postecoglou is whether to use it again or decide that midfield would be too attacking at home against Arsenal with the safer Sarr or Bentancur required.”

I do not see both Maddison and Kulusevski starting in the middle of the park against Arsenal.

Postecoglou will certainly want the legs and the security of either Sarr or Bentancur, with one of the two likely to start alongside Bissouma and Maddison.
