'Crazy': Ohio's GOP governor isn't buying Trump's baseless immigrant pet-eating theory

0

The Republican governor of Ohio on Wednesday poured cold water on right-wing claims — including from former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance — that Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Springfield.

During the Tuesday night debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, the MAGA leader amplified the baseless and racist conspiracy theory, saying: "They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there."

Trump’s remark echoed claims made by his campaign, including Vance, and other Republicans. Vance posted on social media that his office “received many inquiries” about Haitian migrants kidnapping pets, though he acknowledged Tuesday it was possible “all of these rumors will turn out to be false.”

On Wednesday, Gov. Mike DeWine distanced himself from the claims.

"This is something that came up on the internet, and the internet can be quite crazy sometimes," DeWine told CBS News.

The governor added that he believes city officials who said there's no evidence to support the theory.

"Mayor [Rob] Rue of Springfield says, 'No, there's no truth in that.' They have no evidence of that at all. So, I think we go with what the mayor says. He knows his city, " DeWine said.
