As he discusses his decision to leave Duke after four years.

When the wave of transfers hit last season, the one that surprised us most was Jeremy Roach, because he seemed happy at Duke.

He spoke to Jeff Goodman at The Field of 68 Podcast and made the following comments:

“Baylor is definitely the spot I needed to be at for my last year. It was a mutual thing. (Scheyer) already knew what was expected. Personally, I wanted to stay, but stuff didn’t meet up. It was just my time to go. I did my four years. I sacrificed a whole lot in those four years. It was just my time to go. There were no hard feelings or anything. I still stay in contact [with the staff]...I’ll let the whole world know right now. I’m not a 2. I’m not a 3. I’m not a scoring guard. I’m a point guard. That’s just what I had to do at Duke. Right now, I’m a point guard. It’s great to get back to what I do. That was a big thing in my offseason training. I needed to get back to being that point guard. I feel more comfortable. I’m doing what I need to do. It’s no shade at Duke. I made the most of what I did out there. I loved every minute. But getting back to myself, there’s nothing like it.”

Goodman tried to bait him into saying something negative about Duke and Scheyer but Roach didn’t bite.

Basically, it sounds pretty simple: Duke found things worked better with Tyrese Proctor at the point and Roach sees himself as a lead guard. And from his point of view, the NBA just isn't very interested in 6-3 shooting guards, so that’s totally understandable.

Baylor will give him a chance to make that sale and we hope he does. He was a guy that Duke fans really admired and nothing has changed there. Nothing but best wishes for Roach in Waco and wherever else his basketball journey takes him. We have no specific insights here, but like Quinn Cook, he seems like a guy who has a future in coaching if he wants it.
