His efforts may not come as a surprise with the youngster the son of England cricket legend Michael Vaughn.

What may come as a surprise, however, is that Vaughn Jr is primarily an opening batsman – despite his superb bowling efforts.

The batting allrounder contributed 44 runs from 107 balls in Somerset’s first innings, but managed just three during his side’s second turn at the crease this afternoon.

The teen sensation signed his first professional contract in county cricket back in May.

He penned a two-year deal with Somerset that is set to begin in November and run until 2026.

Somerset snapped Vaughn Jr up in their academy back in 2020 and handed him his second XI debut back in 2022.

But now he is looking to break into professional cricket and perhaps reach the dizzying heights his dad once achieved.

Speaking on signing his professional contract, he said: “It’s something that I’ve worked extremely hard for and it’s something that I’ve strived for since I was a kid.

“So to get the opportunity for a club where I’ve really enjoyed myself over the last few years is an honour.”

It’s not just club cricket that Vaughn Jr has his eye on either with the young lad already featuring for England‘s U19s earlier this summer.

And England is where his dad made his mark too.

Michael Vaughn captained England to Ashes glory in 2005, becoming the first skipper to do so since 1987.

Vaughn hung up his bat in 2008 having played in 82 test matches, striking 18 centuries and boasting an average of 41.44.

And he had a touching, albeit short, message for his son after his efforts for Somerset this week.

Posting on Instagram, he wrote: “Well done young un…”.
