With a tiny, mid-mounted 80bhp 698cc turbocharged triple, the Smart Roadster, a sub-brand of Mercedes is one of the smallest sports coupes money can buy.

A modern classic that’s adored by enthusiasts, the Roadster, launched in 2002, came as both a Roadster and a Roadster Coupe.

Similar in looks, the Coupe featured twin removable roof panels and a glassed-in rear end, while the Roadster came with an electrically powered soft-top and had a flatter rear deck.

The rare motor can be picked up for a fairly reasonable price in 2024; we found a great example from 2004 on the CarGurus website for just £2,490 with less than 77,000 miles on the clock.

This one comes with an automatic gearbox, as they all did, and is even ULEZ compliant.

These cars are owned by a host of A-list celebs who will be eager to get their hands on the new concept car once it’s available on the market.

Mel Gibson, Shaquille O’Neil and Simon Cowell are just a few famous names who have a Smart car among their impressive collection.

This comes just months after it was hinted the Smart Roadster could be making a return in the future, some 19 years after it was discontinued.

CEO Dirk Adelmann said via Autocar: “We have three great cars and none of them is a Roadster, but why not?

“[I have] a very emotional relationship with that vehicle.

“If we do a Roadster, rest assured it will be very compact – for sure a two-seater.

“Smart is always unconventional.”

Elsewhere, a Smart model that once belonged to a Jame Bond actor recently sold at an auction.
