Motorist dead in South Chicago wreck

A motorist has died after his SUV slammed into a pole early Wednesday in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The crash happened just before 5 a.m. in the 8600 block of South Commercial Avenue when the victim, a male of an unknown age who was the lone occupant of a Chevrolet Equinox, crashed, police said.

The unidentified driver was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he died after initially being taken there in critical condition, police said.

No other injuries were reported.
