‘Shōgun’ maintains commanding lead in Emmy odds for Best Drama after record-shattering Creative Arts Awards

We thought there was a chance “Shōgun” would break the “Game of Thrones” record for the most Emmy wins for a drama in a single season (12), or maybe even the “John Adams” record for the most wins for any program in a single year (13). But few could have anticipated that it would break those records in just one night at the Creative Arts Awards. It collected a remarkable 14 trophies on Sunday night, and it has the chance for several more on September 15. Chief among those is Best Drama Series, where it’s — no surprise here — the overwhelming favorite to win based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.

On Sunday night “Shōgun” claimed Best Drama Guest Actor (Nestor Carbonell) in addition to awards for its casting, cinematography, costumes, picture editing, hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic makeup, prosthetic makeup, production design, sound editing, sound mixing, visual effects and stunt performance. Coming up this weekend it contends in six more categories: Best Drama, Best Drama Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best Drama Actress (Anna Sawai), Best Drama Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira), Best Drama Directing (“Crimson Sky”) and Best Drama Writing (“Anjin” and “Crimson Sky”).

As of this writing “Shōgun” gets leading odds of 39/10 in the race for Best Drama Series. It’s predicted to win by all 17 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, 10 out of 11 Gold Derby Editors, 21 of our Top 24 Users and 22 of our All-Star Top 24. Its biggest threat appears to be “The Crown,” which won top honors back in 2021; it’s supported by one Editor and two of our Top Users after prevailing twice at the Creative Arts Awards (for its contemporary costumes and production design), but it’s going to be a mighty uphill battle for the queen to overtake the “Shōgun.”
