Remembering 9/11: Six moments of silence honoring lives lost
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Wednesday marks 23 years since terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, killing nearly 3,000 people.
Those lives are being remembered Wednesday morning on the Memorial Plaza during the annual commemoration ceremony hosted by The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. The ceremony also honors those who were killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The names of the victims will be read aloud during the ceremony.
You can watch this year’s ceremony on the PIX11 Morning News and on PIX11.com beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The commemoration observes six moments of silence, marking the times when the World Trade Center towers were struck, when each tower fell, the attack on the Pentagon, and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
The six moments of silence:
- 8:46 a.m.: Hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower
- 9:03 a.m.: Hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower
- 9:37 a.m.: Hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon
- 9:59 a.m.: The South Tower collapsed
- 10:03 a.m.: United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania
- 10:28 a.m.: The North Tower collapsed
New York City will continue to honor the victims of 9/11 Wednesday night with the annual Tribute in Light.
