Suspect held after 'kind' Glenwood liquor store owner slain

0

A person of interest was in custody Wednesday in the fatal shooting of a 'kind' owner of Glenwood liquor store who always operated his business 'with a smile,' officials announced.

A vigil was held outside the Emporium Liquor, 339 E. Glenwood Lansing Rd., Tuesday night a day after the fatal shooting of Naveen Singh, Glenwood officials said in a Facebook post.

"Our community lost a longtime business owner and friend to many Monday night, due to senseless gun violence," Glenwood Mayor Ronald J. Gardiner and the Glenwood Board of Trustees said in the post. "Naveen Singh was a kind man who operated his Emporium Liquor store responsibly and always with a smile. For a dispute with a customer to turn violent makes no sense to us or to his family."

About 6:45 p.m. Monday, Singh was fatally shot following an argument at the liquor store, Glenwood police said. He died about 20 minutes later.

Singh’s son, reached by phone Tuesday morning, was inconsolable.

“He was my everything,” he said, his voice breaking. “I don’t know what we’re gonna do without him.”

An autopsy Tuesday determined Singh, of Chicago Heights, died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Authorities say the incident was isolated and that there is no threat to the public.
