Sony’s PS5 Pro officially revealed and not at the price point many hoped for

0

The PS5 Pro had been speculated about for some time with rumors aplenty over the course of 2024.

Now, Sony has officially confirmed that the console is very much real and will be shipping November 7, 2024, hitting the sweet spot of the Holiday period.

This new mid-cycle iteration of the PS5 is Sony’s “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date” with a new GPU having 67% more compute units than the base PS5 console.

Additionally, there are new features such as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution which hopes to create a crisper image using AI, making games look even better than they already do on the new tech.

As you’d expect, there are already some confirmed PS5 Pro Enhanced titles, mainly from first party studios, that will benefit from the aforementioned improvements, taking the core experiences to new heights.

All of the above sound like good reasons to purchase one but what about the price point?

Well, the PS5 Pro will set you back at least $699 (£699, €799, ¥119,980), a price that has come as a shock to a plethora of gamers around the world.

The reason why we’ve included ‘at least’ there is due to the fact that the cost does not include the vertical stand as well as a physical disc drive.

The vertical stand comes in at $29.99 and disc drive is naturally more expensive at $79.99. So, combining this full package, the total outlay would be $808.98 if you want a Pro system that has the comparable addons the base PS5 has as standard.

The news of the large sum, coupled additional addons, was met with disappointment by some fans and prominent PlayStation influencers.

PlayStation content creator PlayStation Planet revealed that once converted into Euros, they would be able to purchase a PS5, Nintendo Switch, and an Xbox Series S for the same price as a PS5 Pro with disc drive and stand.

Other X users have described the PS5 Pro as having “a premium price [that] doesn’t feel like a premium product” and the decision to price it as $699 is an “absolute shocker”.

With the YouTube video containing the PS5 Pro announcement having a large disparity of dislikes to likes, it’s safe to infer that many are unhappy.

Time will tell for sure if the PS5 Pro and its controversial cost will be a non-issue or if it’ll be the main contributor to a potential Sony blunder.
