Columbus emphasizes collaboration during Public Safety Week.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Columbus is a city many people love and want to feel safe and comfortable in. That’s why City Councilmember Emmanuel Remy said events like Public Safety Week are so important.

Public Safety Week is happening through Sept. 14 and it’s something Columbus City Council started in 2023. This year’s theme is "We Got Us."

“This week is about collaboration," Remy said. "We got us and talking about how we can collectively work together to make Columbus a safer place to live, work and raise a family."

There are multiple events happening throughout the week, including a free community dinner and discussion, a litter sweep in Linden and a gun buyback.

Remy said a big part of Public Safety Week is encouraging people to get to know some of the police officers and firefighters serving Columbus. He said he hopes people will then feel more comfortable when they need help from police and fire.

“We want people to engage with our sworn officers and our first responders,” Remy said. “It’s important that we have community dialogue at any time throughout our community and that’s what we’re trying to foster.”

Remy also asked people to take the We Got Us pledge, which says that we must all invest time, resources and effort into supporting our fellow community members.

“Safety is a feeling. We understand that," Remy said. "We want to make sure people feel safe wherever they live in the city of Columbus."
