TOPEKA (KSNT) - The next generation of Kansas movers and shakers were recognized Tuesday at the Statehouse.

Next-Gen Under30 is a big deal for the Sunflower State. It recognizes exceptional Kansans who, despite their age, are already playing a huge role in the state's success. Young over-achievers across the state were honored today at the 3rd annual Next-Gen Under30 event at the Kansas Statehouse. The program shines a spotlight on young adults in Kansas who are pushing boundaries and giving back to their communities.

Former Kansas Senator Tom Hawk told 27 News it's a way to show homegrown talent and how the individuals have a big role to play in the future of the sunflower state.

"It's been the goal of state government, bipartisan and here in legislature, to really keep our students in Kansas," Hawk said. "And this is one way to let them know that we care about them. They've made incredible accomplishments early in their career and we want them to know that has been noticed."

Emporia State University graduate Brice Helton works for Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita. He said it's an honor to be recognized for his contributions the state's aviation industry.

"I think it's great that young professionals in Kansas are getting recognized because sometimes I feel being young, people look down on us and we're not always recognized," Helton said. "Oh, they're young. Their opinion. They don't have the experience to back up their opinion. So I think its great that we do get recognized for some of our opinions."

Bob Shively, with the Kansas Masonic Foundation, was also recognized during Tuesday's ceremony. He said bringing younger graduating college students together through Next-Gen under 30 helps strengthen the leaders of tomorrow.

"That allows some of the younger graduating college students and others to attend and network with them and understand what's made them successful and encourage them to say, we'll stay in Kansas," Shively said. "This is a great place to live."

This year's winners will be honored in November at the Next-Gen 30 dinner and awards ceremony.
