LASG MEETS WITH WOMEN-FOCUSED NGOS
… Seeks Partnership To Tackle Challenges of Women’s Development
The Lagos State Government has highlighted the importance of cooperation between the government and Women-Focused Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to address the various challenges faced by women in the State.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, stated this during an interactive meeting on Monday with representatives from Women-focused NGOs in Lagos held at the Women Development Centre, Agege.
Hon. Dada emphasised that the state is experiencing growth but also faces hurdles that require collective action, particularly in transportation and environmental sustainability.
“Transportation is the lifeblood of any thriving city, and in a bustling metropolis like Lagos, it is crucial for women who depend on public transport for their daily activities”, she said.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the difficulties many women face in terms of transportation safety and affordability and called for greater engagement between the government and the public to improve the system.
She encouraged NGOs to collaborate with the government in raising awareness about women’s rights within the transport sector, advocating for initiatives such as women-only transport services and community campaigns to ensure safe commuting practices.
“Together, we can advocate for a transport system that prioritises the needs and safety of all, especially the most vulnerable among us”, she noted.
In addressing environmental concerns, Hon. Dada underscored the need for immediate action to combat environmental degradation, which disproportionately affects women.
She encouraged NGOs to facilitate community workshops to educate women on sustainable practices such as waste segregation, recycling, and sanitation, saying “Our government is actively investing in improving waste management and green spaces, but we need your partnership to engage the community and spread awareness”.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluyemi Kalesanwo, thanked all attendees for their active participation and valuable insights, emphasising the importance of collaboration in tackling the challenges facing women in Lagos.
“Your contributions have enriched our discussions and highlighted the pressing needs of women in our state. We all share a common goal of ensuring that every woman in Lagos has access to the support she deserves. As we move forward from this meeting, let us remember that our strength lies in collaboration and partnership to create a more inclusive, safe, and equitable environment for women in Lagos”, she stated.
