Apple brought a refreshed design to its smartwatch lineup with the new Apple Watch Series 10.

Apple officially announced the Apple Watch Series 10 and a design update to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 during its "Glowtime" event on September 9.

The Series 10 is the latest model in Apple's flagship smartwatch lineup, which started in 2015. Both the Series 10 and a new black titanium Ultra 2 are available to preorder now ahead of a September 20 release date.

Apple touted the Series 10 as having the lineup's "biggest display and thinnest design" to date. It also comes in a new titanium frame option and offers a new feature for detecting sleep apnea, among other upgrades that should make it one of the best Apple Watches to date.

Apple Watch Series 10, Ultra 2: Release date and price

The Apple Watch Series 10 and the updated Apple Watch Ultra 2 are available to preorder now from Apple, Amazon, and other retailers. Both will be fully available on September 20.

The Series 10 starts at $399 in aluminum and $699 in titanium, while the Ultra 2 starts at $799.

Apple Watch Series 10: New features

The Apple Watch Series 10 contains a range of upgrades.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is available in a larger size than the Apple Watch Ultra 2, with 30% more screen area than the previous generation Series 9. It's also 9.7mm thick, which is nearly 10% slimmer than the Series 9. The display glass rounds further down toward your wrist, and the display has a rounder aspect ratio.

The case on the Series 10 continues to be made of aluminum with three color options, including a shiny polished Jet Black, Warm Rose Gold, and Silver Aluminum. Apple says the Series 10 is up to 10% lighter than the previous generation.

A new titanium option is replacing the stainless steel options from previous Apple Watch generations. It weighs almost 20% less than the steel models and comes in Natural, Gold, and Dark Slate Gray. Apple has also updated the Milanese Loop to match the titanium finishes.

Apple gave the Series 10 a new wide-angle OLED display that is 40% brighter and easier to read around the edges when you glance at your watch from an angle. The Series 10's display has also been upgraded to animate the seconds hand even when your wrist is down.

Specs and features for the Apple Watch Series 10.

All Apple Watch Series 10 models run on Apple's new S10 processor to support new features, like suppressing background noise during a phone call.

There's also a new Sleep Apnea detection feature that measures breathing disturbances. Pending FDA approval, the sleep apnea feature is expected to roll out by the end of September and will also be available on the Ultra 2 and Series 9.

Apple also improved battery charging, claiming the Series 10 is the "fastest charging Apple Watch ever," with 80% battery charge in 30 minutes. To compare, the Series 9 can charge to 80% in 45 minutes. No improvements were made to battery life.

New water-based features were added to the Series 10, like a 20-foot depth gauge and water temperature sensor. However, it doesn't have the same capabilities as the Apple Watch Ultra 2's similar features, which can sense up to 130-foot depths and include specific scuba functionality.

Apple has also finally enabled the Series 10 to play media from the redesigned speaker so you can listen to music or podcasts when your phone isn't nearby.
