Martin Keown makes shocking claim about the gulf between Spurs and Arsenal
The rivalry between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal is as fierce as ever, but Martin Keown has made a surprising statement about the perceived gulf in class between the two teams.
Spurs are closer than you think
Over the last couple of years, Arsenal have stepped up a gear and are now the main challengers to Manchester City’s Premier League dominance.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have struggled to keep up, finishing eighth and fifth while the Gunners push for the title. It doesn’t make for easy viewing for Spurs fans, but Keown has suggested Arsenal are not actually that far ahead of the Lilywhites.
Talking to talkSPORT about the two teams, Keown said: “No. I think there’s not too much between the two teams whilst there has been this period without a trophy.
“We’re 21 years since Arsenal won the Premier League, it’s been ages since Spurs last won a trophy worth picking up. So they’re in a similar boat.
“Son is a player who might be the difference, Kulusevski, too, and they’re going to be looking at Solanke now coming in — he’s been injured, and maybe this has been a good period for him.
“This could be where his career at Spurs springboards properly. He hasn’t hit the ground running yet but he’s been injured.”
Postecoglou’s project
At the end of the day, it is very difficult to compare the two teams. Mikel Arteta has now been at Arsenal for approaching five years, and has built an impressive squad that has made progress over that time.
Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou is only just into his second year at Spurs, but he has already improved the playing style, the general atmosphere around the club, and their standing in the league.
Spurs Web Opinion
I think Keown is right in many ways. Arsenal may appear to be ahead of us, but they have nothing to show for it still. Hopefully Spurs can bag a trophy this year and silence the noisy neighbours for a while.
