Home Below is a minimal residence located in Nanjing, China, designed by NON STUDIO. Managing natural light was a key focus in the design of the sub-basement. To enhance the lighting, the previously enclosed staircase was moved to the south-facing section, allowing for more natural light to filter through. A sunken living room was incorporated, visually dividing the space and creating distinct living zones. This approach offsets the confined feeling often associated with low ceiling heights, resulting in a more comfortable and inviting environment for gatherings and relaxation. Adjacent to the northern courtyard, the dining and kitchen area benefits from the outdoor space, which is more than just a visual feature.

The courtyard plays a vital role in ventilating the enclosed kitchen and addressing smoke extraction concerns. It also introduces natural light and fresh air, transforming the basement into a multifunctional area for dining, family activities, or even work. In the guest bedroom, floor-to-ceiling windows, combined with a built-in desk, solve lighting challenges while creating a small scenic view. This careful interaction between spaces enriches the overall design and enhances the sense of openness. The master bedroom in the sub-basement includes a cantilevered structure designed to bring in more natural light and create a visual connection with the level below.

Through thoughtful use of materials, lighting, and a muted color palette, the space feels private and functional. The sloped wooden ceiling adds warmth and visual depth, while large glass doors open onto a southern courtyard, allowing light to flood in while maintaining privacy. The walk-in closet, with its folding doors, blends seamlessly into the wall, ensuring the room’s clean lines remain undisturbed. The bathroom, strategically positioned near the courtyard, uses a half-height glass partition to allow natural light to enter. A small corner of the space serves as a tranquil study, perfect for quiet reflection.
