Weekly Statistical Spotlight: Francisco Lindor
MVP! MVP! MVP! Is there anything Francisco Lindor cannot do? He has been the most consistent Met since he started leading off. He is one of the best defensive players in the league, having the fourth-best Outs Above Average with 17. He swipes bases, with an 87% success rate. Despite a recent cool stretch, he’s largely been on fire for four months, in which it seems like every time he bats it will be a productive at bat. For games from August 31 to September 7, Lindor slashed an amazing .391/.435/.708 with a 1.143 OPS. Let’s take a look at his approach at the plate for last week’s games.
Lindor went 9-for-23 with two doubles, and two home runs during last week’s games. His lone hit from the right side resulted in a home run. The graphs below depicts Lindor’s success against different types of pitches. Lindor had a lot of success against faster type pitches. Both his home runs, from both sides of the plate, came off cutters. His doubles came off a fastball and sinker.
Lindor also managed to produce hits against off-speed pitches, but they only resulted in singles. Four of his five singles came off off-speed pitches. He singled off of two splitters, one slider, and change up. Lindor is still covering the plate against off-speed pitches, but he is not looking to drive these types of pitches. He makes contact off these pitches to protect the zone.
Look for Lindor to continue to tee off on fast pitches. He has been timing them very successfully recently. An area that he can improve upon is to drive more off-speed pitches. While he has been successful at covering the plate against off-speed pitches, he has not driven these types of pitches as they have been resulting in singles. If Lindor can improve upon this, this will make him an even more versatile player.
The Mets have won 10 of 11 games, and a large part of that reason is Lindor. While he has been competent in every single aspect of the game, he also has brought his leadership intangibles to the clubhouse. Lindor is the heart and soul of this team. If the Mets secure a playoff berth and make a deep postseason run, those MVP chants may turn into MVP hardware for Lindor.
