Royals Rumblings - News for September 10, 2024
Just keep showing up.
New Royals outfielder Robbie Grossman had some words of wisdom for his new teammates, writes Pete Grathoff.
The veterans also offered some advice to their new teammates, even though they joined the Royals during that ugly seven-game losing streak.
“Just keep showing up. We’ve got a good team,” Grossman said of his message to the team. “There’s a reason why you’re in this position at this time of year. Just keep showing up, putting your best foot forward because good things are gonna happen.”
David Lesky writes about how close the Royals are to making the post-season.
But if you find yourself worried about simply making it, it’s pretty easy to see why it’s not worth worrying. I could have started this chart with an even worse record and felt good about what they have to do the rest of the way. The reality is what I said when I started this section. The worst 18-game stretch for the Royals this season has seen them go 6-12 and you can see above how well other teams would have to play if they did that. What I’m saying is it would require a massive collapse and a team taking advantage of it. I don’t think the Royals could count on teams playing like they did while they were losing seven in a row, but this is happening, so get on board.
Anne Rogers has an update on injured reliever Will Smith.
The Royals want Smith fresh for the last few weeks of the season, so a reset on the IL could help. He has been throwing bullpens and is making good progress, but it’s still unclear when he’ll be ready to rejoin the Royals.
“We are trying to build him back up to see if his back holds up to the increased [bullpen sessions]. He started light and trying to build some endurance, and [we’ll] see how it goes,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.
Tod Palmer of KSHB talks to Lucas Erceg about his sobriety.
Rawlings stitches “6/10/2020” into Lucas Erceg’s glove at the Kansas City Royals reliever’s request.
It’s the day Erceg got sober, so he welcomes the reminder of how lucky he is every time he takes the mound.
“It was the greatest decision I’ve ever made,” Erceg said.
Eric Hosmer’s media company is producing a short film about the 2014 Royals.
“To see everybody, to be back in Kansas City, was a blast,” Hosmer said Monday. “And to be able to watch this team now, there’s a lot of similarities. There’s a lot of hunger in the fans and the team to get back to the postseason. It’s crazy that it’s already been 10 years since that ‘14 team run, but it was fun to be back, to celebrate that and to see this team playing as well.”
