'Being lied to': Marjorie Taylor Greene reignites war with Mike Johnson

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is on the warpath against House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) yet again.

In an interview with CNN's Manu Raju, Greene declared that she was not at all satisfied with Johnson's plan to attach a new law mandating proof of citizenship as a prerequisite to voter registration to a must-pass government spending bill.

"It’s absurd, and it's going to frustrate people, because our Republican base will know that they're being lied to, and they're tired of being lied to, and we have an election coming up on November 5," said Greene, who has repeatedly spouted falsehoods to Republican voters about the 2020 election being "stolen" from former President Donald Trump.

Greene also described Johnson's efforts as a "fake fight."

Although Johnson's plan to jam through the citizenship measure will be doomed in the Democratic-led United States Senate regardless, Johnson had at least hoped to get the measure through the House of Representatives and throw pressure to avert a government shutdown back to Democrats.

Thanks to hardliners such as Greene, however, it appears that effort may not succeed and that Johnson may nonetheless be left holding the bag for a government shutdown just weeks before the 2024 presidential election.

When asked by Raju if Greene's defiant statement was making him rethink his strategy, Johnson said it was not.

“I’m not going to engage in conjecture and try to game out all the outcomes," Johnson told the CNN reporter. "I think this is something that we should do, and that's what we're doing. I told the conference that this morning, I'll say it here again. I am resolved on this, and I don't know what more I can say to show that conviction."
