Severe delays in Lincoln Tunnel to NYC due to crash: Port Authority

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Multiple crashes caused severe delays approaching the Lincoln Tunnel to New York City Tuesday morning, according to Port Authority.

Delays got so bad that some bus riders opted to walk alongside the New Jersey Turnpike, video shows. It was not clear where they were going.

All lanes of the Lincoln Tunnel Center Tube were reopened by 9:15 a.m. after an earlier crash, according to Port Authority. A motorcycle crashed in the tunnel's center tube around 3:50 a.m., sources told PIX11 News. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to sources.

There was also a disabled bus inside the south tube. That was cleared by 8 a.m. Delays reached up to 90 minutes in the tunnel's south tube, but had dropped to about 10-15 minutes by about 10:30 a.m.

NJ Transit buses were experiencing 60-minute delays in and out of New York City, according to the agency's website.

Officials were investigating a second crash on the New Jersey-bound side of the tunnel, according to Port Authority.

An overturned vehicle on Route 3 in East Rutherford approaching the tunnel caused even more traffic. The westbound side of the route was closed, while the left lane was blocked on the eastbound side.

"Officially spent two hours on a bus from Hackensack to NYC. A trip that usually takes 35-40 minutes. And I’m not even on the road into the tunnel yet. Atrocious," wrote one rider on X.

The Holland Tunnel was experiencing delays of an hour due to heavy traffic volumes stemming from the Lincoln Tunnel crash, according to Port Authority.

New Jersey Transit also experienced several service disruptions during the Tuesday morning rush hour.
