Mets Hall of Famer Ed Kranepool Passes Away

0

The New York Mets announced Monday afternoon that Ed Kranepool passed away Sunday, September 8 after suffering from cardiac arrest in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 79.

Kranepool was an original Met, part of the 1969 Miracle Mets team that brought the first World Championship to Flushing, and an All-Star in 1965. A New York native, he played his entire career with the Mets from 1962-1979, primarily as a first baseman, but spent time in the outfield. A career .261/.316/.377 hitter, Kranepool amassed 1,418 hits in 1,853 games. He is the franchise leader in games played.

In reflecting on time with his former teammate, Cleon Jones notedI just spoke to Ed last week and we talked about how we were the last two originals who signed with the Mets. The other 1962 guys came from other organizations. Eddie was a big bonus baby and I wasn’t. He never had an ego and was just one of the guys.”

Art Shamsky memorialized Kranepool sayingWe had lunch last week and I told him I would be there next week to see him again. I’m really at a loss for words. I can’t believe he’s the fourth guy from our 1969 team to pass this year — McAndrew, Grote, Buddy, and now Eddie.”

May he rest in peace.
