Mets Trade for UTIL Eddy Alvarez, DFA Pablo Reyes

0

The Mets acquired left-handed hitter Eddy Alvarez from the Boston Red Sox Monday in a trade for cash considerations. The team designated Pablo Reyes for assignment as the corresponding move.

Alvarez, 34, last played in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, when he hit .160 in 25 at-bats. In 126 career at-bats over three years with the Dodgers and Miami Marlins, the utility player has one home run, four stolen bases and a .183/.262/.262 slash line. He can play second base, third base and the outfield.

He hit 18 homers and was 18-for-25 at stealing bases in Triple-A Worcester this season with a .811 OPS. The Mets may have been looking for another left-handed bat after the season-ending injury to Jeff McNeil.

A two-time Olympian, Alvarez won silver in the short track speed skating 5000 m relay in Sochi in 2014 and silver as a baseball player in Tokyo in 2020/2021.

Reyes, who received a September 1 call-up when rosters expanded, appeared in one game with the Mets and scored as a pinch runner.
