Anyone using non-damaging tie downs?

My tie downs either have metal ratchets or non-ratcheting metal buckles that I alway have to use inventive ways to prevent them damaging the boat.

Not sure if this black buckle is metal or plastic but it sure looks less potentially damaging than my stuff. What are you folks using? How do y'all keep buckles or ratchets from chewing at your boat?
