Greenville schools add security to check for sex offenders
GREENVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Greenville Central School District is taking an extra step to keep students and faculty safe this school year, with a new security system. The Raptor security device allows staff to identify each visitor and also looks out for one unique thing.
Greenville High School administrators like Principal Kristy Goergen said they want to ensure students' safety with the influx of visitors coming in and out of the doors each day.
With the new Raptor system, Alexis Aloisi, Greenville High School and middle school attendance secretary can now check off multiple boxes before a visitor comes inside. This includes checking the sex offender registry.
“If there is someone that comes into the building that is on the sex offender registry, obviously we would not allow them into the building, so it's just that extra step to make sure our students are safe," said Principal Goergen.
Alexis explained that the new system scans visitors' IDs for basic information including their name, address, and picture. It will also notify which kids parents have permission to pick up, and if anyone has a court order against coming onto school property.
“If there is any reason why they should not be in the building its gonna come up bright red," said Alexis.
Otherwise, the person's ID will pop back up with a green light, and a visitor pass will print out for them to wear around the school. Principal Goergen said this helps staff know what time a visitor entered, and can even be as specific as what classroom they're supposed to be in.
Alexis said although this system was just introduced during the first day of school last week, it is already working better than the last one.
“Before we used to kind of have to chase after them and kind of ask them to come back," said Alexis. "We have had several occurrences of that so it's just another way to keep everyone safe."
Principal Goergen said the safety of students and faculty is always top of mind for the district. She anticipates there will be more safety features added to the schools going forward.
