Maddison opens lid on leadership meetings with Postecoglou, Son and Romero

James Maddison reveals that Ange Postecoglou never sets foot inside the changing room at the training ground as he wants the senior players to be in charge.

One of the first things that Postecoglou did when he arrived at Tottenham last summer was to make big changes to the leadership group.

Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were relegated from their senior roles while Harry Kane departed the club.

Son Heung-min was handed the captain’s armband, with Maddison and Cristian Romero made his deputies.

It came as a surprise to see the England international being named as vice-captain, but a year on, the decision has certainly been vindicated, with the former Leicester City star proving his leadership credentials both on and off the pitch.

The leadership meetings at Tottenham

Maddison has now explained that Postecoglou holds leadership meetings with the trio where he makes it clear to them that it is their job to ensure that the atmosphere in the changing room is right.

The attacking midfielder told Golf Life: “We’ll sometimes have leadership meetings where the gaffer, the gaffer is really good at that. He leaves the changing as the changing room.

“He will never set foot in the changing room at the training ground ever, like he won’t even walk through. He won’t do anything, he says to me, Sonny and Cuti that that is our space. You keep that under lock, anything out of line, that’s your responsibility which I like.

“A bit of helping the young players, which I would do anyway without the title and then obviously if Sonny’s injured then Cuti or myself wear the armband but that’s kind of the minimal stuff compared to the training ground stuff.”

Postecoglou is evidently a leader who likes to delegate and empower those under him, and in Son, Romero and Maddison, he has three fantastic characters who he can count on to maintain harmony and the right attitude in the changing room.
