Red Sox Release Recently DFA’d Veteran Pitcher Rich Hill

BOSTON -- Just 13 days after 44-year-old Rich Hill kicked off his fourth stint for his hometown team, the Red Sox announced they had released the left-handed pitcher on Monday after he was designated for assignment on Friday to make room for Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester.

Hill made four appearances for the Red Sox after signing a minor-league deal with the Boston on Aug. 16. He tossed two scoreless innings, striking out two in one appearance with Triple-A Worcester before being activated by the Red Sox on Aug. 27. He made his season debut on Aug. 29 when manager Alex Cora made the call to the bullpen in the seventh inning of the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hill pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings, striking out two of the four batters he faced in Boston's 2-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

In his first two appearances, Hill tossed 2 2/3 perfect innings, fanning three opponents. Over his next two appearances, Hill was tagged for a combined two runs on a homer and three walks. He fanned another two batters along the way. Overall, Hill pitched just 3 2/3 innings during his latest Red Sox run, logging a 4.91 ERA with five strikeouts and three walks.
