BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- One student was arrested and charged in connection with a stabbing that left a 15-year-old student in serious condition Monday at McKinley High School, Buffalo police announced.

A 15-year-old male of Buffalo was charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by persons under sixteen, officials said.

Police said at approximately 1:10 p.m., school resource and police officers responded to a stabbing call at the school, where an altercation between three students ended in one student suffering from multiple stab wounds, one in the neck, one in the back and one in the arm.

During a press conference Monday, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said the incident occurred during a fight on a stairwell between classes.

A school security guard arrived at the scene quickly and got the injured student to the nurse's office for treatment before being transferred to Oishei Children's Hospital by ambulance, according to officials.

Officers tracked the other two students allegedly involved in the altercation and apprehended both of them. A knife was also recovered, police said, and they are unsure how it got into the school through McKinley's weapons detection system.

Officials said the 15-year-old remains at the hospital in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

Gramaglia said the victim and two others involved in the incident are the same people who were involved in another stabbing in July, which occurred on Main Street around Fountain Plaza, he said.

The incident was captured on the school's security cameras. Gramaglia said the investigation is ongoing as they review the footage.

Superintendent Dr. Tonja Williams said that school will “absolutely resume” on Tuesday.

The student who was arrested and charged is awaiting arraignment at the detention center on East Ferry Street.
