Michigan Republican says Dem secretary of state 'will be prosecuted' over 2020 election

A GOP state lawmaker in Michigan called for Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to be prosecuted in a post on X.

"Benson will be prosecuted and convicted for the 20 election laws she broke in 2020," wrote Matt Maddock, a member of the Michigan Freedom Caucus who boasts about being endorsed by former President Donald Trump. He is also the husband of Meshawn Maddock, a former state party chair being prosecuted as a "fake elector" who tried to overturn the election results.

Maddock's post, which did not elaborate on what laws she may have broken, came in response to a ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court that upheld Benson's decision to keep Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the ballot, despite his bid to get his name removed.

Kennedy, an independent presidential candidate who ran under many conspiracy theories, recently ended his presidential campaign and threw his support behind Trump. Some Republican megadonors had contributed to his campaign hoping that he would siphon votes from Democrats, but polling has been unclear about which candidate would have lost more votes to him. He has since tried to get his name removed from battleground state ballots in the hope his former voters would back Trump instead.

Benson, who was first elected in 2018, has been a frequent target of hate from Trump and his supporters.

In 2022, Benson alleged that Trump privately remarked during a White House meeting that she should be arrested for treason and executed, although the former president's spokesman has denied this and accused Benson of fabricating the incident.
