2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress
Less than eight months after she earned her first Oscar notice in 29 years, Jodie Foster is widely expected to prevail on her very first acting Emmy bid. The “True Detective: Night Country” star indeed belongs to a full slate of newcomers to the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress category, with half of her competitors also being general first-time acting nominees.
Along with Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), Foster is one of three women currently nominated for leading the latest iteration of an anthology series. Those recognized here for single-season programs are Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”) and Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”).
In order to determine the extent to which Foster can count on a win, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.
Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers (“True Detective: Night Country”)
Two-time Oscar winner Foster ended her nearly five-decade hiatus from physical TV acting by portraying an Alaskan police chief who reunites with an old colleague to investigate the disappearance of a group of scientists. She previously garnered Emmy bids for producing the telefilm “The Baby Dance” (1999) and directing the third episode of “Orange Is the New Black” (2014).
Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott (“Lessons in Chemistry”)
Like Foster, Larson is simultaneously recognized as one of her show’s executive producers. The 2020 winner for Best Interactive Program (“The Messy Truth VR Experience”) stars on this Apple TV+ series as a 1960s cooking show host who uses her background as a chemist to uniquely educate her primarily female audience.
Juno Temple as Dot Lyon (“Fargo”)
Temple, a three-time supporting nominee for the comedy series “Ted Lasso,” follows Kirsten Dunst (2016) and Carrie Coon (2017) as the third “Fargo” actress to earn a notice in this category. The show’s fifth season tells the story of how her character’s life as an ordinary Minnesota housewife is disrupted when her abusive former husband discovers her whereabouts.
Sofía Vergara as Griselda Blanco (“Griselda”)
11 years after receiving her fourth and final Best Comedy Supporting Actress nomination for “Modern Family,” Vergara is recognized here for her embodiment of a real-life Colombian drug lord who operated for decades in Miami, Florida. The six-part series also garnered creative arts mentions for its cinematography and costume design.
Naomi Watts as Babe Paley (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”)
In her second TV collaboration with multi-hyphenate Ryan Murphy following 2022’s “The Watcher,” Watts plays one of several New York City socialites whose scandalous life partially inspired Truman Capote’s unfinished novel, “Answered Prayers.” The 55-year-old shares the distinction of being a complete Emmys newcomer with Tom Hollander, who is nominated in the corresponding male category for his take on Capote.
So, who will win the 2024 Emmy for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress? Although no “True Detective” performer has yet merited a TV academy prize, Foster shouldn’t worry since the same applies to “Fargo” and “Feud.” One may think to argue that season one star Matthew McConaughey came up short even after winning an Oscar that same year, but his situation differed in that he lost votes to a castmate (Woody Harrelson) and probably didn’t have much chance of stopping Bryan Cranston from achieving his farewell Best Drama Actor win for “Breaking Bad.”
“True Detective” should be expected to garner multiple wins for its best-received season, with Foster representing its strongest shot at a major victory. In the absence of a challenger from multi-category frontrunner “Baby Reindeer,” she mainly has to watch out for Larson and Temple, either of whose win would be counted as a surprise since Foster holds a Gold Derby backing rate of 75%.
