The star shortstop of the New York Mets was named the team’s nominee for one of baseball’s highest honors

The New York Mets star shortstop has been nominated for one of baseball’s highest honors. It is the second straight year he was nominated as the Mets’ nominee. The last Met to win the honor was Curtis Granderson in 2016.

On Monday afternoon, Francisco Lindor was named the team’s nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. The award is presented to the player who, according to the description on MLB.com, “best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

Lindor, along with MVP-caliber contributions on the field, has consistently been a great representative of the Mets organization off the field.

His bio on the award’s website describes his contributions to his hometown and New York-based community.

“Since 2020, believing that education is at the foundation of the future of any child, Francisco has contributed significantly to Montverde Academy, his alma mater in Florida. To provide resources to the next generation, Francisco helped fund and develop “Lindor Hall,” a two-story middle school building with extensive facilities, including innovative science laboratories and a technology laboratory. As the lead donor, he contributed $1 million to the project. Francisco has also established the “Francisco Lindor Scholarship Fund,” offering financial assistance to students who otherwise could not attend Montverde Academy.”

Additionally, Lindor has worked to donate backpacks to the Queens community.

The star shortstop “started a new tradition in August 2023 to partner with New Balance for a back-to-school backpack distribution. Last year, Francisco was on hand to personally distribute new backpacks and school supplies to middle schoolers from the Tommie Agee School in East Elmhurst, Queens. This year, students at a local elementary school in Queens will be surprised by Francisco as recipients of new backpacks.”

Considering all of the great work he has done, Lindor is a great choice to represent the Mets for the award. The nomination is especially meaningful to Lindor, who has long idolized Clemente due to their shared Puerto Rican heritage and love for humanitarian work.

Fans will have a chance to ensure Lindor wins the award, as voting will run from September 9 to September 29.
