Save up to $17 a month on phone, internet services with this program

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) is raising awareness this month of a program that can help people pay off phone and internet bills.

The KCC issued a press release Monday, Sept. 9 for Lifeline Awareness Week, which runs from Sept. 8-14. This program benefits those who need help paying for residential or wireless phone service, internet or a bundled phone and internet plan.

The Lifeline program offers people up to $17.02 per month in federal and state discounts to pay for these services. Individuals living on tribal lands may qualify for additional discounts.

The KCC said almost eight million people nationwide, including 23,000 Kansans, benefit from this program. People can sign up for Lifeline based on whether they are at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or participate in the following programs:

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
  • Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA).
  • Veterans Pension & Survivors Pension Benefit.
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance.
  • Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
  • Head Start Tribal Programs (income based).
  • The Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands.
