‘Colossal’ and ‘crucial’ – Spurs star earns rave reviews for international showing

Spurs fans may lament the international break as an unnecessary distraction from the club’s main mission, but it has given one fringe player the chance to shine for his country.

With the first-choice pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at centre-half for Spurs, and Radu Dragusin very much the next in line there, Ben Davies is unlikely to see much action for the Lilywhites this season.

However, at international level, he is still considered a key figure for Wales. He won his 88th cap for his country on Friday night in a 0-0 draw against Turkey, and as you may have guessed, solid defensive work was the order for both teams.

The national media in Wales have hailed Davies’ latest display, with Wales Online giving him an 8 out of 10 rating and writing: “Did everything asked of him all night. A colossal performance.”

Meanwhile, Y Clwb Pel-Droed also awarded the Spurs man an 8 out of 10, and said: “Davies was solid at the back playing up against Real Madrid talent Arda Guler keeping him quiet through the game.

“He provided a crucial block following a poor pass from [Danny) Ward] and made some key interceptions to deny the away side opportunities.”

According to the data from Sofascore on the game, Davies has the numbers to back up his praise. He won two ground duels and two aerial duels, had 115 touches of the ball, and registered an 87% passing accuracy rate with 100 of 115 passes reaching their destination.

He also managed two interceptions, one tackle, and one block to cap an impressive defensive display.

While Ben Davies may not be a key player at Spurs, there is simply no way you can downplay his value as a solid, reliable defender.

He still has a role to play for us as a cover option, and we’ll likely see more of him this month in the cup competitions.
