Alasdair Gold explains one big change he expects from Spurs this season
Alasdair Gold believes that, unlike last season, we will see Tottenham become a stronger and fitter team as the campaign goes on.
Spurs have struggled in 2024
Tottenham’s wheels came off in a major way towards the end of last season, with the Lilywhites being pipped by Aston Villa to a fourth-place finish.
It is fair to say that some Spurs fans are far from happy with the summer business that the club have done, with a few even questioning if the squad is any stronger than it was last season.
However, Gold believes that the current Tottenham squad is much better equipped to cope with Ange Postecoglou’s style of play, with the journalist suggesting that Dominic Solanke may make the crucial difference for the North London side.
When asked about Spurs’ recruitment and whether the squad is much stronger than last season, the journalist said in a Q&A on Football.London: “I think it’s a stronger squad that’s far better suited to what Postecoglou wants. Solanke in particular will be the missing piece for me in the Australian’s system. He’s going to score a lot of goals.
“It’s a very young squad, so there will be some inconsistent moments but it’s also a squad that Postecoglou can shape into what he wants it to be with good options in most positions, albeit not quite all of them.”
Spurs should get fitter as the season goes on
Gold suggested that, unlike last campaign, we might see a much stronger Tottenham team during the latter stages of the Premier League, due to the options that Postecoglou now has to rotate his squad.
He added: “I think the Europa League has to be a strong target. There are some tricky teams in there but no more will drop down from the Champions League now.
“Overall I’d expect the reverse of last season in that this Spurs squad should get stronger and sharper as the Premier League campaign goes on but it will have the options in plenty of positions now to get through the number of games and injuries.
“I think the results haven’t reflected the performances so far, so Spurs are probably going under the radar at the moment. The Arsenal game will be tough but I think there’s a lot of exciting displays to come when Postecoglou can get an actual striker, a fit and sharp one, upfront in his system.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This Tottenham squad is undoubtedly better equipped to cope with injuries than the squad of last season, but we need to keep the likes of Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Son and Maddison fit for large parts of the campaign to have any hope of competing at the top end of the table.
