Spurs fans will remember the heated affair between the Lilywhites and Brentford last season, when Neal Maupay decided to copy James Maddison’s darts celebration for the opening goal of the game. Now, Maddison himself has commented on the current relationship between the two players.

James Maddison has no issue with Maupay

That game back in January of this year saw Brentford take the lead early on through the French striker, then on loan from Everton. Maupay then proceeded to taunt Spurs by replicating Maddison‘s trademark celebration.

The situation really got heated when the pair came face to face shortly after, with Maddison appearing to react angrily to the disrespect.

But, Maddison and his Tottenham teammates were the ones laughing at full-time, as they completed a turnaround and secured all three points in a 3-2 win. The Lilywhites even managed to hit back at Maupay directly, with Brennan Johnson mocking his copycat celebration after scoring.

Now, Maddison has been asked about the whole situation by Golf Life, and insists there are no issues between him and Maupay now.

He said: “No [I haven’t spoken to him]. No beef. I was more frustrated because we conceded than he did my celebration. I’m a bad loser, I love winning more than actually hating him. He’s trying to be a wind-up merchant, he’s trying to create that image, but no, nothing from my side.”

Maupay in Marseille

Maupay may enjoy winding up his opponents, but his career has not exactly gone to plan of late. After failing to secure a permanent switch to Brentford, the Frenchman was pushed out of Everton and has ended up signing for Marseille in his homeland.

He managed just 33 goals in 160 games in the Premier League over the last few years (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

That old saying, “The lion does not concern himself with the opinion of sheep,” comes to mind.

Why would Maddison care about someone so insignificant as Neal Maupay, whose biggest achievement is winding someone up and then losing the game anyway?
