Report: Free agent midfielder contacts Spurs and Arsenal to arrange a deal
The transfer window may be closed, but there is still some top talent out there available on a free transfer, and now one of those players has reportedly approached Spurs and Arsenal looking to facilitate a move.
Rabiot courts North London rivals
Spurs had a fairly busy summer, though that was largely with players moving on rather than coming in. Still, the signings of Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke, and Wilson Odobert have certainly added fresh energy and talent to Ange Postecoglou‘s squad.
One area the club was expected to reinforce further was in the centre of midfield, but no other signings came to fruition.
Now, though, it seems one player the Lilywhites have been linked with many times could be pushing for a deal to be struck, and he wouldn’t cost Spurs a penny in transfer fees.
That’s according to Graeme Bailey at TBR Football, who claims former Juventus midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, is eager to join either Spurs or Arsenal after being made a free agent at the end of last season.
Apparently, Rabiot has been offered big money by the Saudi Pro League, and had deals on the table from both Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in Turkey, but he is keen to stay in Europe’s top leagues.
All the Big Six clubs, plus Aston Villa and Newcastle are thought to have held conversations with Rabiot’s people, too, but no offers have come his way. Still, that hasn’t stopped his agent pushing for a move to one of the North London clubs.
However, it is thought Rabiot’s wage demands of £220,000 per week, have been putting potential suitors off and he will either have to lower that request or leave Europe.
Rabiot wants a Premier League move
According to Fabrizio Romano, it is a switch to the Premier League that has been at the top of Rabiot’s wishlist.
The Frenchman had reportedly made it clear he wanted to join Manchester United at one stage (TuttoSport, relayed by The Standard). However, more recently it was suggested Arsenal were leading the race for his signature (Gazzetta dello Sport via The Express).
Spurs Web Opinion
Rabiot is a top-quality midfielder, no doubt about it. But, there’s no way we are about to shell out over £200k on wages for a 29-year-old, in a position where we are fairly well-stocked already. I can see a Saudi move coming.
