Forgotten Spurs man may hope for a ‘way back into the first team’ – Journalist
According to Ben Jacobs, Sergio Reguilon could look to force himself back into Ange Postecoglou’s plans, just as Djed Spence has done.
Why is Sergio Reguilon still at Spurs?
It came as a surprise to many when Reguilon stayed put at Spurs beyond the closure of the transfer window, given that the left-back is evidently not part of Postecoglou’s plans and is into the final year of his contract.
With the transfer window still open in Turkey, the 27-year-old still has an opportunity to leave Hotspur Way, rather than rotting on the bench for the rest of the season.
In fact, Postecoglou has already sent the former Real Madrid man a warning, remarking that the defender is not guaranteed to be integrated into the squad if he stays (The Standard).
Reguilon was close to a Lille transfer
Jacobs has now revealed that Reguilon came close to a move to Lille earlier this summer but the move fell through as the Ligue 1 side could not come to an agreement with Spurs.
The journalist also suggested that the door might not be completely closed for the Spain international at Tottenham if he does end up staying.
Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “I think he’ll be quite picky with his next move, but Reguilon was ready to go to Lille on loan. It’s just the fact that Tottenham were very tough on their terms, and were pushing for that loan to have either an obligation or, at worst, a suitable buy option.
“That was too high for Lille to agree with, and therefore he ended up going nowhere. So like many, many players now looking for last-minute summer moves, Reguilon will be looking at the Turkish market and hoping that something materialises.
“But if it doesn’t, then he’ll sit tight at Spurs with the belief that, like Djed Spence, there might be an unlikely way back into the first team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I think it is pretty clear by now that Reguilon has no way back at Tottenham. He will likely end up moving to Turkey, with the reunion with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce very much on the cards for the left-back.
