This Drake Maye Idea Shut Down After Patriots’ Win Over Bengals

The Patriots surprised the NFL world in a variety of ways Sunday afternoon.

For starters, few expected New England to roll into Cincinnati and notch a Week 1 win. The visitors ran all over the Bengals and Jacoby Brissett completed a handful of very timely passes, all of which were made possible by solid offensive line play.

Considering how good the O-line looked at Paycor Stadium, former Patriot Jermaine Wiggins was inclined to ask Jerod Mayo if the coaching staff now would feel comfortable potentially adding Drake Maye packages to the offensive game plan. Unfortunately for New England fans itching to see the rookie play, it's an idea Mayo isn't even considering at present.

"C'mon, Wiggy. We won the game. C’mon, Wiggy. Hey, it's about Jacoby," Mayo said on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show." "Look, how many plays did he make yesterday with his legs? From a defensive perspective, you don’t really expect that. He did a good job. Jacoby did a good job controlling the game, not making mistakes. We won the turnover battle.”

Mayo added: "As a coaching staff and as an organization, we're 100% behind Jacoby. We're 100% behind Jacoby and we have a developmental plan for Drake. It's not for you guys to know what the developmental plan is. We're developing him as well as getting Jacoby ready to go out there and be our starting quarterback. I'm not sure what else I can say about that."

Sunday was very encouraging for the Patriots and their quarterback situation. It was only one game, but Brissett looks like he will be able to keep the ship afloat this season. This should decrease pressure to hand the keys over to Maye, who can be developed at a comfortable pace.

So, as long as Brissett is effectively managing games, Mayo and company won't have much to talk about behind center.
