Another Sunday, another game and this one was our first home game of the season. Millwall Lionesses were the visitors to Princes Park and we headed into this full of confidence, following our first win of the season against Newhaven FC last time out.
Darts began this game very much on the front foot and were almost ahead very early on. In the 4th minute, a great cross from Beth Powell found Poppy Payne unmarked at the back post. The Darts defender diverted the cross towards goal, but the effort was cleared off the line by the Millwall defender.
Darts continued to create the better chances and went close again in the 10th minute of the first half. A great ball across the six yard box from Teni Charles found Amy Russ, effort on goal forced a smart save from the Millwall keeper.
Momentum was building with every attack and it wasn’t long before the Darts made it count. In the 22nd minute, a great team move from the home side found Ellie Dolby in space on the right, cross came in and found Amy Russ in the box, who fired home to put us 1-0 up.
The home side continued to create chances and we doubled our lead in the 32nd minute. A corner from Abbey Davies found Poppy Payne in the box, the headed effort on goal deflected off the Millwall defender and the Darts were 2-0 up at the halfway stage.
Darts began the second half brightly and it wasn’t long before we got our third goal of the afternoon. In the 54th minute, a great through ball from Xayla-Rae Alberts found Amy Russ, the Darts forward rounded the keeper and poked the ball into the empty net.
Darts were searching for goal number four and it came our way in the 61st minute. A shot from Beth Powell on the edge of the box looked like a simple enough catch for the Millwall keeper. However, the keeper lost control of the ball and was unable to prevent it from going in.
In the 65th minute, Darts were reduced to 10 players as Beth Powell was sent off for a second yellow card.
As the second half continued, the visitors created a couple of half chances. The best chance came in the 71st minute as a good move from Millwall saw them get in behind the Darts defense, the effort on goal just past the post.
In the final stages of the half, the visitors created another couple of half chances, but the Darts defense were determined to get another clean sheet and defended well late on; earning our second clean sheet in as many games.
A good performance from the Darts sees us earn all three points in our first home game of the league campaign. Thank you to all the fans for coming out and supporting us this afternoon. It’s good to be back home!
