The International Organization for Migration (IOM) released its Flow Monitoring Snapshot for Afghanistan covering the period from August 25 to August 31, 2024.

The report recorded that between August 25 and August 31, 2024, 63,540 people arrived in Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan, while 96,522 Afghan nationals left for Iran and Pakistan. The article highlighted that “this week, outflows surpassed inflows by 34 percent.”

During the same period, 67,944 people entered Iran, and 27,578 entered Pakistan. The IOM noted a 14% increase in the number of people leaving Afghanistan and a 34% increase in entries into Iran and Pakistan compared to previous weeks.

Additionally, the IOM reported that 16,257 individuals have entered Afghanistan from Turkey since the beginning of the current year. Earlier, the IOM had noted that between September 18 and 24, 72,624 people entered Iran and Pakistan.

The situation is compounded by ongoing international reactions to the forced returns and deportations of Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan, highlighting the need for continued attention and support for displaced populations.

The sharp increase in migration underscores a dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Afghanistan. The surge in outbound and inbound movements highlights the country’s profound instability and worsening conditions.

Since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghanistan has faced escalating poverty, widespread unemployment, and a severe economic downturn, which have significantly exacerbated the plight of its citizens. The harsh policies and restrictions imposed by the Taliban have further restricted opportunities, pushing many to seek refuge or employment opportunities abroad.
