At least 48 killed in fuel truck explosion in Nigeria
On Sunday, at least 48 people were killed in a fuel tanker truck explosion in north-central Nigeria, according to the state’s disaster management agency.
The explosion occurred after the fuel truck collided with another vehicle.
The State Emergency Management Agency in Niger State reported that the collision involved a truck carrying travelers and cattle, and several other vehicles were also affected.
Hussaini Ibrahim, a spokesperson for the agency, confirmed the death toll of 48 and mentioned that officials are still working to clear the scene.
The explosion comes amidst a recent significant increase in gasoline prices by Nigeria’s state-owned firm NNPC Ltd. Last week, the company raised gasoline prices by 39%, the second major hike in over a year. This increase has led to ongoing fuel shortages, causing long queues at petrol stations across major cities and towns.
The tragedy highlights the severe consequences of the current fuel crisis in Nigeria, where rising prices and shortages create critical challenges for everyday life.
