In her viral video, TikTok user Shauna (@homediydiary) showed her followers the “really cheap” method she swears by.

She explained that she adds a secondary glazing to her “poorly insulated” windows to reduce her energy bills.

For her first step, Shauna ensured her windows were “squeaky clean” wiping them down with Windowlene.

After cleaning the glass, she tackled the window frames with white spirits.

According to the DIY pro, this step is important as you need to ensure the double-sided tape sticks to the frames.

Shauna used the Diall Clear Window Film, available for £8.15 from B&Q.

The window insulation film came with a roll of double-sided sticky tape.

She advised her audience to “trust the process” as she secrured the tape to the edges of the window.

Next, she took out a sheet of the film and cut it roughly to the size of the window.

Shauna recommended leaving the film “a little bit bigger” to ensure full coverage.

She demonstrated how to “overhang” the insulation film over the window.

“Pull it tight, removing as many wrinkles as you can,” Shauna told her viewers.

For her final step, she held a hair dryer a few inches from the film and start heating it, working from top to bottom.

“Initially, you’re going to see that the film has some wrinkles on it but once you heat it the film is going to tighten up and the wrinkles will be removed,” she explained.

Once finished, the film is will be completely see through and will act as a secondary glazing to insulate the window.

How to save on your energy bills

SWITCHING energy providers can sound like a hassle - but fortunately it's pretty straight forward to change supplier - and save lots of cash.

Shop around – If you’re on an SVT deal you are likely throwing away up to £250 a year. Use a comparion site such as MoneySuperMarket.com, uSwitch or EnergyHelpline.com to see what deals are available to you.

The cheapest deals are usually found online and are fixed deals – meaning you’ll pay a fixed amount usually for 12 months.

Switch – When you’ve found one, all you have to do is contact the new supplier.

It helps to have the following information – which you can find on your bill –  to hand to give the new supplier.

  • Your postcode
  • Name of your existing supplier
  • Name of your existing deal and how much you payAn up-to-date meter reading

It will then notify your current supplier and begin the switch.

It should take no longer than three weeks to complete the switch and your supply won’t be interrupted in that time.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the hack in the comments section.

“My mum did this in the early 1990s when I was a teenager, could of been cling film she used though,” wrote one viewer.

“We have single glaze wooden windows and putting this up has made a world of a difference,” said another follower.

“Been doing this for years in old homes in Canada, works super well,” commented a third person.

“Just did this for a few windows and there’s a NOTICEABLE difference!” wrote another TikTok user.
