‘Another Setback’: Fans Get Angry After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Exclusion From India’s Test Squad For 1st Match Vs Bangladesh
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on September 8, announced the Indian squad for the 1st Test of the 2-match series against Bangladesh. The 1st Test will begin on September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. A total of 16 players were selected while the playing XI is yet to be decided.
Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal got maiden Test call-up and Rishabh Pant, along with Virat Kohli are likely to make a comeback to red-ball cricket. However, there was a disappointment for some of the fans as they did not find Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad. The batsman recently led India C to Duleep Trophy victory and scored 5 and 46 in respective innings, which was a surprising exclusion from the squad.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has won many fans due to his brilliant domestic record with an average of 42.69 and scores of many runs. However, he has not won a place in India’s Test squad. Of course, he was in excellent form, having led India C to win the Duleep Trophy, did not help Gaikwad wear a Test jersey at the moment. The squad already has three openers, with Yashasvi Jaiswal all set to partner captain Rohit Sharma while Shubman Gill prefers to bat at No. 3.
That means fans of Gaikwad would have to wait a bit longer to see him in India’s Test team. The opener could get a chance to play in the limited-overs series against Bangladesh, though. His last international outing was in the Zimbabwe vs. India T20I series, where he wasn’t bad with the willow.
India’s squad for 1st Test vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
