Nestor Carbonell (‘Shōgun’) wins Emmy for Drama Guest Actor

0

Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) won his first ever Emmy Award for Best Drama Guest Actor at Sunday night’s Creative Arts ceremony in downtown Los Angeles. The journeyman performer from “Lost,” “The Morning Show,” “Suddenly Susan” and “Bates Motel” had never been nominated at the Emmys before. He was also a Gold Derby TV Awards winner in the same category a few weeks ago.

He defeated Paul Dano (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Tracy Letts (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”) and John Turturro (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”). According to Gold Derby odds, he was the favorite at 82/25 odds to prevail in this guest star category.

When chatting with Gold Derby’s Tony Ruiz earlier this summer, he declared, “Excess was not a part of his vocabulary” about his role as Vasco Rodrigues in the FX period drama.  His character is a unique creation: bombastic, wily and always looking out for his own best interests. He calls Rodrigues “a dream of a role.” The submitted Emmy episode was “Anjin.”
