The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Edmundo Sosa (back spasms)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Edmundo Sosa was placed on the 10-day IL with back spasms prior to the Sunday, Sept. 8 game against the Marlins. The move is retroactive to Sept. 7. Seth Johnson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his spot on the roster. Johnson will start Sunday’s series finale against the Marlins. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 8)

  • J.T. Realmuto (sore left knee)
  • Status: Out of the lineup
  • Realmuto fouled a ball off his left knee in the second inning during a game on Sept. 6 in Miami. He remained in the game until being pinch-hit for in the top of the fourth inning. The Phillies announced Realmuto was removed from the game with a left knee bruise.
  • Realmuto on Sunday, Sept. 8 told reporters, including Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer, that his knee is feeling much better than it did on Saturday. Lauber added that Realmuto could play “in a day or two.” (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 8)

  • Alec Bohm (left hand strain)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Bohm was removed from the Aug. 29 game against the Braves with what the Phillies said was “left hand discomfort.” He was in some pain after fouling off a pitch in a first inning at-bat against Charlie Morton. Thomson initially feared that he suffered a hamate injury, but it appears the Phillies have avoided the worst case scenario. “The X-rays, there was no structural damage,” Thomson said. “We got a break.”
  • After six days of keeping him on the active roster with the belief he wouldn’t need an injured list stint, the Phillies placed Bohm on the 10-day IL with a left hand strain Friday. The move is retroactive to Sept. 3, as the maximum you can backdate an IL stint is three days. Infielder Buddy Kennedy has been recalled. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 6)

  • Austin Hays (kidney infection)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Hays was placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 2) on Sept. 5 with a kidney infection. Cal Stevenson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his spot on the roster.
  • Manager Rob Thomson told MLB.com that Hays is going back to Philadelphia for tests. The club originally thought they could knock it out with some antibiotics, but Hays “feels worse today.”
  • “Obviously I’m not a doctor, but they’re telling me that it’s hard to tell how long it takes,” Thomson said. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 5)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list; Expected back in 2025
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter threw to batters for the first time since his major league spring training debut on March 1, 2023, according to Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. He reportedly sat 97-98 mph with his fastball and touched 99 in the 15-pitch live batting practice session, which took place in Clearwater, Fla. Thomson told reporters in Toronto that the next step is for him to throw another live BP session on Saturday, Sept 7. He’ll continue to throw every three days for the time being if all goes well. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 5)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Turnbull is throwing up to 120 feet this week. Thomson noted on Aug. 28 that if Turnbull does return this season, it will be as a reliever, because there just isn’t enough time remaining for him to build up and start against.
  • Turnbull will throw a bullpen this week. The Phillies remain hopeful, but non-committal on whether the righty will make it back this season. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 1)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)
