Spoiler alert! White Sox kill Red Sox hopes, 7-2
No team losing decisively to the South Siders — with a five-run rally in the ninth, no less — can have serious playoff aspirations
With a stunning, five-run comeback in the ninth to snap a 2-2 tie, the White Sox effectively ended their Red counterparts’ season on Sunday. Not that the Carmines had any real hope of chasing down the postseason, and a loss is just a loss. But ... is it? THIS White Sox team comes back on you? That’s gonna leave a mark.
The game-winning run came at the top of the rally, as Dominic Fletcher doubled home pinch-runner Bryan Ramos (yes, Bryan is alive and Grady Sizemore let him play!) to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead:
While there is plenty of love to spread around in this comeback — and for a strong pitching effort from the White Sox staff — Fletcher continues to reward Sizemore for his faith, as he stood out with the glove and arm as well, earlier in the game.
Next up are the Cleveland Guardians, 49 games ahead in the standings but just 5-5 against the White Sox this season. The White Sox have never finished more than 56 1⁄2 games out of first place in a season, so this series packs some intrigue, from that standpoint at least.
