Statistics reveal just how important Cristian Romero is to Argentina
Cristian Romero has become a key figure for his country, but a deeper look at some of his statistics have proven just how valuable he is for Argentina and how much better they are with him in the team.
Romero is a rock at the back
Since making his debut for Argentina in June 2021, Romero has become a regular starter for the South American side.
He was heavily involved in their Copa America win in 2021 and again this year, and was a prominent part of the World Cup win in 2022. Put simply, Argentina have been a better team since the Spurs defender made his breakthrough at international level.
It’s easy to see how good Romero is just by watching him in action for La Albiceleste, but statistics shared by Squawka have offered a better idea of just how influential the centre-half has been for his nation.
Squawka tweeted: “In 2023, Cristian Romero played nine times for Argentina, keeping eight clean sheets and conceding just two goals. In 2024, Cristian Romero has played nine times for Argentina, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding just two goals.
“[Argentina] have conceded a goal every 375 minutes on average while he has been on the pitch in that time.”
Best in the world
Romero has been earning praise once more for his latest performances for his country. TyC Media described the 26-year-old as a ‘beast’ and claimed there is no better centre-half in the world now.
Meanwhile, statistics from Fotmob based on Argentina’s latest game, a 3-0 win over Chile, showed Romero made three clearances, two headed clearances, two interceptions, and six ball recoveries to help his side claim another clean sheet.
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham and Argentina fans really aren’t just saying this for the sake of it or because of bias; Romero is the best centre-half in the world.
He’s really good for Spurs, but he seems to have another level to his game when it comes to representing his country.
