0

Charalambos Mylonas, described by the shipping deputy ministry as a “pioneer” of Cypriot shipping, died on Saturday.

Announcing his death, the shipping deputy ministry said he “contributed to the most to the Cypriot shipping register and leaves with us an important work, an indelible imprint, and an invaluable contribution.

“The establishment of the Cypriot shipowners’ union in 1981, of which he was chairman for more than two decades, as well as the preparation of the first collective agreement for seafarers on Cypriot ships, are milestones which bear his stamp.”

They added that his name “ranks among the most important pillars of Cypriot shipping.”

Mylonas was the founder of Transmed shipping in Greece after leaving his hometown of Famagusta after the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974. The company was mainly involved in the field of dry cargo and oil transport.

He is survived by his wifle Chariklia, his children Nicole, Katerina, and Elias, and his grandchildren.

His funeral will be attended by Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanoli and Greece’s ambassador in Nicosia Stavros Avgoustides.
